FOREWORD
The Ministry of Agriculture and Water, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, under the guidance of H.E. Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Sheikh, the Minister of Agriculture and Water, and under the direction and patronage of His Majesty King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz, has brought about a revolution in agriculture in this country. Indeed, the speed of this marvelous achieve- ment in the field of agriculture has been such that sometimes we are abruptly faced with problems that have traditionally bothered other agriculturally advanced countries. One of these is the weed problem in agricultural areas and the weed control need.
The Regional Agricultural and Water Research Center (RAWRC) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water (MAW) had taken the initiative and carried out a survey of weed problems of the Arabian Peninsula. Dr. Chaudhary's recent publication Manual of Weeds of Central and Eastern Saudi Arabia brought out by RAWRC has been of great help in the identification of weeds and weed problems but we did not have any guide on how to control these in different crops in different regions of the Kingdom. The Research Department of MAW very keenly felt the need of such a work. The climatic, soil and social conditions of Saudi Arabia and its unique weed flora combined with the most sophisticated agricul- tural technology being used here, precluded the use of weed control manuals available for other countries. Therefore, the Research Depart- ment of MAW commissioned this particular handbook for use in Saudi Arabia.
We were fortunate that for the last twenty years Dr. Abdur-Rahman Saghir, Professor of Weed Science at the American University of Beirut (AUB) had been engaged in research and consultancy in weed control in the region including Saudi Arabia while Dr. Shaukat Ali Chaudhary of RAWRC (on assignment from AUB under the Saudi Arabian - U.S. Joint Commission) had been studying the weed problems in Saudi Arabia in particular and the Arabian Peninsula in general. I am very happy to see now in print this valuable, comprehensive and up-to-date book on weed control and geared specifically towards solving the weed problems in Saudi Arabia. I have no doubt that this book shall prove to be of
